How to Care for your Dulcimer

Tim says, "Take care of your Dulcimer".

"It is my hope that anyone who has a dulcimer will play it and enjoy it. Groups of players are in many regions, and this is a great way to learn to play. This means that you will take your dulcimer with you when you travel, but don’t leave it in the trunk of your car or let it cook in the sun. I’ve found that when we travel, one way to protect our dulcimers is to sandwich it between pillows or blankets that will serve as “thermal protectors”. Temperature and humidity will bring changes in the tuning of the instrument, so don’t be alarmed if it doesn’t sound right when you go from an air conditioned room to they hot humid summer air. Lacquer and shellac are two often-used finishes for dulcimers. Both seal the wood and even enhance the quality of the sound. I typically use shellac with a final coat of a fine-furniture type carnuba wax on my dulcimers because they are traditional finishes and are environmentally friendly. These finishes are relatively easy to keep looking nice considering that any dulcimer that is played a lot will inevitably pick up some scratches and dings. A bit of advice, however: Don’t clean your dulcimer with alcohol, as this will dissolve the shellac. Also, don’t store your dulcimer (or any other musical instrument) on the sticky shelving material often sold for use in kitchen cabinets. This shelving material is great for holding the dulcimer in place when you play, but it can stick to the finish if the two are stored together. Finally, keep your dulcimer away from rain or excessive moisture and do not hang it over a fireplace for display. Excessive moisture can damage your instrument as can prolonged exposure to the excessive dry heat conditions over a fireplace. Take care of your dulcimer, and you will get a lifetime of enjoyment from it."
